Institute for American Universities (IAU College)
The Institute for American Universities (IAU College), founded in 1957, is chartered by the Board of Regents of the University of the State of New York and recognized by the Rectorat of the Université d’Aix-Marseille. One of the first institutions to make study abroad available to non-language majors, IAU established itself as a European center for undergraduate study in the arts, humanities, and social sciences for students from over 500 U.S. colleges and universities. Located in the Provence region of southern France, it may be the oldest and largest study abroad program in Europe.
To respond to the varied interests and educational needs of its students, IAU offers a range of settings, courses, internships and curricula. The largest program, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences located in the heart of the historic city of Aix-en-Provence, provides French language and cultural studies to students at all proficiency levels as well as a choice of arts and sciences courses taught in English or in French. The Marchutz School of Fine Art, located in Cezanne’s countryside just outside Aix-en-Provence, is designed as an intensive experience in painting, drawing, and their interrelationships with history, literature and philosophy (complemented by the study of French and an elective). IAU College has also expanded to offer traveling seminars during the January term throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East as well as summer programs in Barcelona, semester programs in Paris and customized Faculty-led courses during the January term and summer. IAU caters to students from any major field. It is also possible for students to take courses at the local French universities. IAU has also initiated degree programs, including a Master of Fine Arts through the Marchutz School, an International Business MBA and a License 3 for European students.
IAU stresses cross-cultural communication and self-awareness. Many of its over 20,000 alumni have gone on to international careers around the world.
